  7. Basia Bulat (CAN)
    Artist image
Breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia.
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukelele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.

This isn't your usual 'danceä music. These are opiated rave-ups, like early bleep techno chopped and screwed, or shoegaze in an electric exoskeleton. Beaten down, scuffed-toe bass meditations wrapped in desert blues and dub delay- ambient music with an anti-pop brain and a rock n roll heart.
Circlesquare is Vancouver, British Columbia's Jeremy Shaw now living in Berlin. Don't be suprised, though, if he doesn't sound like any of his citymates: for the legnth of his career, Circlesquare has never sounded quite like anyone but Circlesquare.

They are shameless in their creation of ‘white’ power pop full of supple references to 1960s hit bands, 1970s singer/songwriters and 1980s new wave. But their music never feels retro. They combine the old with the new in a way that only makes perfect sense for a band that developed a few bar stools away from the sample mayhem of 2manyDJs.

LITTLE SCREAM’S MUSIC is—like her moniker—full of perfectly satisfying contradictions. It is at once familiar and completely distinct; effortlessly absorbing multiple genres into a sparkly and cohesive landscape.
From her early days performing with a battered acoustic guitar through a cigarette amp, to her current multi-layered solo act typically combined with a rotating band of all-star musicians; one thing remains true for Little Scream: things are always done in her own weird and wonderful way.

It's a noise that doesn't fit into one idea. It's the sound of bicycles whirring down the bridge, the vibration of trucks rumbling overhead, the quickly approaching whoosh of the subway, the snippets of noise you hear as street musicians stay still while you keep moving.
It's the majesty of organs spilling out of a cathedral on a Sunday morning, it's the lonesome howl of a harmonica played in the park, it's the thud thud of taxis driving over loose man hole covers and the inexplicable booms of noise that swell through sky scraper canyons.
